Virtual Classroom

If I wore a virtual teacher and teaching from my house I would have the kids do something on the computer. They would do research on a topic that we were learning about at the time. They would take the notes on there blog, and say how they found the information and where they found it. I would check their blogs and make sure that everyone is on track. The students would all learn something new and know how to find this information. The person with the most information on the subject would get a prize so that everyone will participate in the activity. The person who wins will not only win something but they also win the knowledge of something new. So everyone wins without really knowing. So that is how I would teach kids from home.

There are a lot of things that I like about your comments. First, you are learning about how to do research on the Internet. This is one of the most important things to learn, because when you leave school, there will be things that you have to learn to do by yourself all the time. As a virtual teacher, I am glad to know that when I give an assignment, the students know how to figure many things out by themselves. Second, you know that it is important to give credit to the source of your information. One of the reasons this is important is people will know that you’re not just making things up and that you might be a good source of information in the future.

Some students say that it is the teacher’s job to provide all the information they need to do an assignment. Before the Internet, this was often true. Today, there is too much information for anyone to know, even your teachers. But if you know how to use the Internet, it isn’t necessary to know and remember everything. Often your teachers learn as much from an assignment as their students!

Finally, you make a very important and mature statement about winning. I think it makes you very happy to figure things out by yourself. Winning a prize for finding the most information would be great, but you reward yourself every time you learn something new!

If you could give your teacher an assignment, what would it be? What do you think your teacher should learn about the Internet?

Great work on your blog - you have some very interesting posts! I am a science and maths teacher from Victoria, Australia and I teach lauren (you left a comment for her). We are on first term school holidays at the moment - the Victorian government decided to roll the easter holidays and the first term break all into one - so first term was only seven weeks long. I was interested in how to teach students as a virtual teacher - do you think kids could do science experiments at home? Would you get bored at recess and lunchtime without your friends?
    Keep up the good work!
